You can fit up to 45mm wide tires with 700c and 47mm tires with 650b on both the True Grit and Anywhere. That's a whole lot of tire with room for the elements.

What is the maximum tire size for the True Grit/Anywhere?

The True Grit & Anywhere bikes are designed for 700c gravel tires, in proper width (up to 45mm) and with short chain stays (425mm). When fitted with gravel tires you have the optimal setup for gravel with proper pedal-to-ground clearance. Then when you swap to slimmer 700c tires, say 30mm, the bottom bracket "automatically" drops accordingly. Which is exactly what you'd want.

The reason to go this route is that a gravel 650b tire (approx. 47mm wide) and a gravel 700c tire (approx. 40mm wide) have very dissimilar diameters. If you optimize the height of your bike bottom bracket for one, the other suffers.

However, if you still crave for 650b, you can fit up to 47mm wide 650b tires.

Why is the True Grit/Anywhere optimized for 700c wheels?

Lauf Seigla offers more space for your bottle under the downtube than our previous True Grit. To achieve this extra space, we pushed the mounts as far to the front (away from the front tire) as possible. This places the lower one on a slightly curved BB surface. This means that you should use a somewhat flexible bottle cage in this location. One that conforms slightly with the bottle cage bosses, i.e. do not use a rigid metal bottle cage. A plastic cage would is best, a carbon one can also be used. If you have a long water bottle that you want to angle upwards, closer to the downtube to get even more space, use e.g. presta valve shims under the lower bottle cage boss. One or more, up to a maximum of 6mm thickness.

The difference is small but huge.
- It can take wider tires, or up to 57mm (2,25”)
- It is slightly longer. Axle to crown is 8mm longer or 419mm (from 411mm)

How is the new Grit 3rd gen. Fork different from the Grit/Grit SL forks

No, the Seigla bike is only available for 1x drivetrain. The absence of a front derailleur mount is not just that, the absence of something. Its absence brings the presence of approximately 5mm extra tire clearance. Using space that would otherwise be reserved for an inner chainring, even though you’re riding a 1x configuration. As we strongly prefer 1x on our bikes for its simplicity, light weight and robustness, this “tradeoff” was an obvious choice to make.

Can I use 2x drivetrain with Seigla?

You can fit up to 57mm wide tires (2.25”) with 700c on Seigla and Seigla Rigid. That's a whole lot of tire with room for the elements.

What is the maximum tire size for Seigla?

Seigla is a new and improved version of the True Grit/Anywhere. It has more tire clearance (57mm vs 45mm) & 3x the rear compliance (measured from saddle rail to rear axle) without sacrificing what we loved about the previous Lauf models!

The Seigla also has a 12x100 front thru-axle and takes full advantage of being optimized for a 1x drivetrain only.

How is Seigla different from the True Grit & Anywhere bikes?

-Actual tire dimensions vary between tires and tire manufacturers. Both in tire width and tire radius.
-Lauf Seigla has 6mm of tire clearance to each side of a measured 57mm wide (~2.25") tire.
-Rigid Seigla is not limited in tire radius, as it doesn't need to reserve space for suspension.
-Suspended Seigla (Grit 3rd gen forks) was designed to use every available millimetre of radial space for suspension & tire clearance up front, while minimising fork length. A longer fork would lead to compromised lateral stiffness, since longer forks flex more laterally, and longer forks require a shorter frame head tube for a given frame "stack" value, which again compromises front end lateral stiffness.
-The up to 2.25" / 57mm tire clearance on Lauf Seigla Suspended is based on a 2.25" tire radius of 368.4mm. This approximate number is common for 2.25" tires intended for smoother XC riding. Or as we call it nowadays, gravel riding.
-Knobby 2.25" tires generally have a larger radius than smoother ones.
-A clearance of 26.0mm is recommended between top of tire and the bottom of fork crown (this corresponds to a tire with radius of 368.4mm). You don't need full 30mm of clearance because: The suspension travel path of the fork is not directly up towards the limiting part of fork crown. It goes 26.0mm up towards crown while following an arc of 26.8mm length. This compresses the bump stop rubber pads on the fork by 1mm. Furthermore, a contributor to the ground tracking capability of our suspension forks on gravel roads is their negative travel down past the zero point. It's hard to put an exact number on this travel, but it's in the excess of 3.2mm.
-If you are up for it, there is nothing wrong with exceeding 368.4mm ever so slightly, say by a couple of mm. This can results in "gentle" interference to the underside of the smooth surface of the Grit fork crown when bottoming out the fork. Bottoming out is rare during use of our gravel forks, only lasts a split second and the resulting interference force between tire and smooth crown surface will be limited, as it doesn't take a big force to indent a tire by a couple of mm.
-Studded tires should be chosen carefully and radius to stud ends preferably kept below 365mm, i.e. tire should have a clearance of approx. 29.4mm to crown, as studs are clearly not as forgiving and gentle as rubber. In practice, to avoid scratching the underside of fork crown, this might translate to downsizing your studded tires to approx. 2".
-Having said all this... We at Lauf have ourselves been riding 2.25" tires with good results on suspended Seigla.

Seigla tire clearance

The bikes arrive with tubes installed. However, the tires and rims are tubeless ready (rims arrive taped) and the accessories box you receive with your bike includes tubeless valves. So the only thing you need to do is remove the tubes, install the tubeless valve stems and add your own sealant. 

Do the bikes arrive with tubeless setup?

Steering speed wobble is a phenomenon where the handlebar of a bike starts to oscillate left/right at speed. In general, this should not happen when holding the handlebar while riding. This can however more easily happen when riding (fast) no-hands. This is quickly and easily stopped by simply touching the handlebar again. This no-hands-wobble is natural to occur when e.g. riding a compliant big-tire front-suspension gravel-optimized bike fast on tarmac.

If you experience a no-hands wobble, we advise that you check that your headset is adequately tightened, that your spokes are properly and evenly tensioned, that the tire sits well on the rim, that your wheel through-axle is tightened and that your bike/fork/wheels is not structurally damaged (e.g. from a crash). Let’s understand steering wobble better…

What causes it?
This wobble is the result of the bike steering self-centering force laterally flexing the bike system (tires + wheels + fork + frame + seatpost) in one direction, and then a moment later when the flex of the bike system “bounces back” the front wheel has returned to the opposite side of center, so that now the self-centering force of the steering flexes the bike system back the other way, i.e. in the same direction as the initial flex is “bouncing back”. In other words, this means that the “bounce back” of the flexed bike system is now in synch with the “new” self-centering force, meaning that they amplify one another. This causes an ongoing oscillation of the handlebar, until it’s interrupted by e.g. gently touching the handlebar or by an imperfection in the road.

For this phenomenon to occur, one needs to ride at a speed where the self-centering forces starts to fluctuate left/right rapidly enough to hit the lateral oscillation frequency of the bike system.

What makes a bike more likely to wobble?
There are two fundamental properties that define when you hit the oscillation frequency of a bike system:

How quick the steering      is on the bike.      The quicker the steering, the easier it is to hit the oscillation      frequency (less speed required). A slacker head angle gives slower and      more stable steering. A steeper head angle gives faster and less stable      steering.

How flexible the bike      system is.      A more flexible bike system “bounces back” slower than a more rigid one,      therefore you don’t need to ride as fast to hit the oscillation frequency      of a more flexible bike system.

For the best effect, our Grit suspension forks are designed for gravel riding on laterally stiff frames. An example of this is our very own Seigla bike. Basically, the more laterally rigid frame allows us to add more suspension into the fork without the combined system becoming too susceptible to wobble. Laterally soft frames, e.g. skinny steel or titanium frames, are more susceptible to steering wobble.

When riding on gravel, in particular on rough gravel, wobble tendencies are minimized. This is because the lateral input forces from the ground that create and maintain the wobble aren’t strong and consistent enough when riding on a broken and slippery gravel surface. Therefore, a gravel bike can (and should) go further in adding compliance (flexibility) than a road bike should. Looking at a front wheel, compliance can e.g. be added through increased tire cushioning (big tire size and low pressure) and/or through suspension such as a Lauf Grit fork. With both these suspension elements on a gravel bike, the bike does indeed become smooth and fast on gravel! Simultaneously, it’s only natural for the tarmac (or other smooth grippy surface) no-hand-riding wobble-speed to become lower than what it otherwise would be (e.g. on a rigid road bike).

On road bikes wobble can occur, even on quite rigid carbon road bikes without any suspension elements, when the quick steering of a “classically” steep head angle is combined with high speeds descending on tarmac.

Road-like-gravel-bikes (or big tire road bikes) that combine classical road geometries (mostly steep head angles) with voluminous tires are in particular likely to wobble, despite not having a suspension fork. The increased flexibility from the big tires enables the quick steering to reach the oscillation frequency more easily.

Mountain bikes are also generally susceptible to wobble, because they usually have such big and laterally flexible tires. However, they nowadays compensate by super-slack head angles. And, are perhaps rarely ridden fast enough on tarmac.

Heavily loaded bikes are more susceptible to steering wobble. As the loads can in effect turn a decently laterally stiff bike into a soft and springy one, as it now needs to deal with more mass. This is particularly true if that mass is mounted up high and/or rigidly (counter intuitively, a more loosely mounted mass may actually prevent wobble, as it is both unable to serve as the necessary anchor for the oscillation and by killing oscillation through friction). 

Taller and/or heavier riders are more likely to experience wobble, as they flex the bike system more easily with their up-high-mounted (mounted = sitting on the saddle) more substantial mass. Unloading the saddle will generally immediately stop wobble for these riders, as the bike loses its anchor point for oscillation.
